Although women make up half of the population, women are still rare in leadership roles and this in the entertainment industry is no different. A research conducted under the University of Southern California's Annenberg Inclusion Initiative(Aii) found four of 2018's top 100 grossing films were directed by women.

At the panel "Making the (In)visible: Progressive Transparency in the Data-Driven Age" Jan. 25 presented at Sundance with the Aii and moderated by Aii creator Stacy Smith, actress Tessa Thompson officially launched the "#TIMESUPX2 TIME 'S UP 4 percent Challenge" to address inequality. The initiative calls on entertainment people to "announce their commitment to[ working] with a female director on a feature film in the next 18 months." This promise was made publicly by dozens of people in front of and behind the camera, as well as seven major studios like Warner Bros and MGM.
