Many people find it alluring to dream about a shorter workweek. Above all, finding enough time for the things we enjoy can be difficult enough. Was it fair then to start working less on our pursuit of happiness? Advocates can compromise on a shorter workweek but it would require broad approval of these steps.

Today's chart plots data from the 2019 World Happiness Report and the OECD to determine whether there is any relation between the happiness of a country and the average hours worked per person. Still, symptoms can go beyond normal stress and fatigue in severe cases.
For example, the American Heart Association found that people under the age of 50, despite being working for a decade or longer for more than 10 hours a day, are at greater risk of stroke. Another study conducted in 14 countries found that 12 per cent of people working long hours were more likely to become heavy drinkers.
