Bacterial resistance to the commonly used antibiotics is growing. Yet what induces antibiotic resistance, how does antibiotic resistance spread and what are the consequences? For more information please see this infographic. At least 2 million people develop serious infections with multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogens annually in the United States, resulting in the deaths of 23,000 of those individuals.

Antimicrobial resistance used to be mostly confined to healthcare environments rather than affecting the general population, but in the last 10 years more drug-resistant infections have emerged in urban settings.

By 2050, the Wellcome Trust predicts that the number one cause of death worldwide would be resistant infections, with an estimated 10 million deaths attributed per year. Due to the limited number of potential antimicrobial agents in the pharmaceutical pipeline, concerns that far outweigh current major global diseases such as Aids, tuberculosis and malaria could be addressed.
