Deep Work Summary: How to Focus amidst a World of Distraction World By Cal Newport #infographic

Newport should be paying particular attention to how we handle the enormous amount of daily emails we get hold of every so often. He describes e-mail as an particularly insidious mode of shallow work, since it "provides you with daily distractions."

In the book he sets out a number of strategies which he uses in dealing with email for my part. However, the one that I consider most practical and helpful to put into action, is his suggestion to "do extra work" when reacting to an email. Here he recommends focusing on generating "process-centric" emails, rather than grabbing a quick response that is likely to lead back and forth to a series of equally lower fashion emails. When drafting a procedure centric answer to an email, you must intentionally shut down the loop of verbal exchange as quick as possible.
