In the past 12 months, buying US corporate bonds for environmental reasons hasn't been a successful practice. However, as the market is swelling, so-called green bonds are being prepared for better returns as investors pump cash into assets which could potentially save the world.

"Capitalism and responsible investment are not mutually exclusive," said Stephen Liberatore, head of the Fixed-Income Strategy Group responsible for Nuveen, in a telephone interview given on January 24. "And when they're done together properly they work very well."

The Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Green Bond Index — which tracks green corporate bonds — had gained around 13 per cent in the 12 months to January 24. This is less than the broad investment-grade corporate debt benchmark, which has returned approximately 16 per cent, according to the Bloomberg Barclays index data.
