St. Louis's death toll is the highest per 100,000 people. In every 100,000 St. Louis men, approximately 36 are shot and killed by police. It is 23% more than that of Orlando, which had the second-largest number of deadly shootings per 100,000. Ninety of the 100 cities we surveyed had less than half the number in St. Louis among the deadly shootings. The other metropolis of Missouri, Kansas City, is also number 6 in the top ten.

Although New York City is the most populated city in the U.S., with more than twice as many residents as the second most populous city, Los Angeles, it currently has the lowest police-murdered population rate: 0.2 out of every 100,000 (or one in every half million). This is down 83 percent from Plano, TX, 99th-place city, and down from St. Louis by 99.5 per cent.

Police killing numbers is part of the debate over using excessive force due to the obligation to protect and serve, but they don't say the whole story. Looking at police shootings race by race, the data reveals a large gap. A small number of Black people killed by police was used to indicate a racial disparity in law enforcement.
