The e-cigarette is a battery-operated system that heats up the e-liquid to an aerosol, or "vapor." The e-liquid is a combination of chemicals, artificial flavorings, and nicotine that is normally contained in a bottle or tablet. There are several cartridges that can be replenished and others can be replaced with unused. Such applications take different shapes and colours. Others are designed to imitate cigarettes or cigars, or even a flash drive with a USB.

Vaping explains how the aerosolised e-liquid is inhaled using a device. The heated aerosol chemicals produce a thick fog-like film that looks like smoke from cigarettes. Once heated, the properties of chemical substances with e-liquids change. Once inhaled, the aerosol particles are toxic to the lung lining. Inhaled from an e-cigarette, nicotine is as addictive as conventional cigarettes.
