At the beginning of March, before the pandemic case, some AGUINAOVI guides raised the alarm when they found two adult flamingos trapped in snare traps, in the surroundings of Caño San Luis, Laguna de Oviedo. In a futile attempt to get into flight, the guides quickly tried to free the trapped flamingos as the birds flapped their wings in panic. The guides were able to log the rescue operation and when they returned, they told their companions: "We need to catch all those traps ... let's go in."

In these tough times, we wanted to share this beautiful story about the local heroes of the Laguna de Oviedo Nature Guides Association of Jaragua National Park (AGUINAOVI), which is committed to the conservation of biodiversity. More than ever, given the current situation in the Dominican Republic, remembering the value of community and participatory management in our protected areas, and the important role local ecotourism plays in the sustainable development of the local economy, is essential.
