Seventeen percent (n = 21,184) reported current asthma-like symptoms but no diagnosis of asthma (during the last 12 months) Eleven percent (n = 13,619) of children reported current asthma-like symptoms as confirmed by physicians. Among children with asthma-like symptoms and no asthma diagnosis, 20 percent had missed half a day or more of school each month because of wheeze, 25 percent had decreased wheeze-like behavior once or twice a month, and 32 percent had wheeze-related sleep disturbances in the last 4 weeks.

Seven percent of children with current symptoms of asthma but no diagnosis reported one or more visits to the emergency room for asthma-like symptoms, and 5 percent reported hospitalizations due to wheeze last year. Over the last month, nearly half (47 percent) of children with asthma diagnosed by a doctor reported missing a half day or more from school. In the past year, 30 per cent of doctor-diagnosed children reported 1 or more emergency room visits for asthma-like symptoms.
