Many countries made great strides in reducing SOX emissions; EEA-33 SOX emissions dropped by 74 per cent between 1990 and 2011. In all the EEA-33 countries emissions were lower compared to 1990 in 2011, with the exception of Iceland (3.8 times higher) and Turkey (52% higher)

The large increase in SOX emissions in Iceland, from 21 kt in 1990 to 81 kt in 2011, is largely attributed to the estimated emissions from the 'Power Generation and Distribution' industry, which increased by 51 kt from 1990. In 2011 this industry alone had already contributed 79 per cent of Iceland 's overall emissions. Such emissions consist mainly of fugitive 'other energy production' emissions from the market.
