Alas, pedestrian deaths are on the rise. The Governors Highway Safety Administration announced that in 2019 there were 6,590 pedestrian deaths, an rise of 5 per cent over the estimates for 2018. This is an rise in deaths of 60 per cent since 2009.

Nearly half of pedestrian incidents involved unhealthy driving patterns for the driver and/or the pedestrian, such as speed, distracted driving and alcohol impairment. Other important factors include talking and messaging on cell phones, eating while driving, programming a GPS, putting on makeup and other habits that take the driver's eyes from the lane.
